My latest Goodwill Books order is in-bound. I had no clue about this story. Neither did my paternal grandfather who said in 1932, “If Roosevelt is elected, grass will grow in the streets!”
Gramps was also a member of the “Silver Shirts” and smashed the free prescription eye glasses my father brought home from a Cleveland Public School , declaring “Doctors are quacks!” He was MAGA and MAHA, 100 years ahead of JFK Jr! The public school program gave eye exams to children and provided corrective lenses so they could learn – “Socialism!” The upside was, my Dad’s uncorrected vision in one eye worsened and made him “4F ” in WWII when he tried to enlist. Lucky for me! He’d have gotten killed and I wouldn’t be a 50’s baby writing this. And so it goes.
